Will the Original La Paz Batchoy, Please Stand Up!
My girlfriend, Peps, has been raving about Deco's La Paz Batchoy since she came back from a work stint in Bacolod City. We learned that there is only one branch of Deco's in the entire island of Luzon and thank God, it's just in Makati.
We were giddy like kids when we got to the place. Peps, reliving one of her Visayan food adventure and I, for the first time, tasting that much talked about delectable combination of kaldo, pork meat and entrails, chicharon, fried garlic, green onions and miswa. Yes. MISWA (misua).
Deco's offers an option whether to have your traditional miki or miswa with your batchoy. You might miss it on their menu because it's written in fine print so you had to specifically tell them that you want miswa in your batchoy (sotanghon and bihon are also available).
What's the difference? The eating experience. The miswa feels less springy, taking away that noodle feel that miki brings. But miswa absorbs more of that clean flavor of kaldo (the batchoy broth which, I say, is unlike any other). Miswa also traps that signature generous serving of sahog (toppings) with every spoonful.
Also take note that you can refill your bowl with kaldo as much as you want along with chopped garlic and onions.
(Batchoy Prices are at Special P67; the bigger bowl Super P77; and my choice Extra [even more toppings] P82)
No sebo (lard) settling on top even when the broth gets cold is just awesome.
"What they say was true, not only it is the original, it is the best Batchoy ever created!"
I silently exclaimed after having my first taste, mindful that being hysterically excited about tasting a noodle soup is just plain weird, not to mention, would definitely embarrass my girlfriend. So after finishing a bowl, I just stood up, went to the counter and asked the them to give me 2 orders of Deco's Original La Paz Batchoy, to go.
